NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Capital Athletic Conference Tournament concludes Saturday afternoon, and for the second straight season since joining the league, the Captains of Christopher Newport will battle for the title. CNU, fresh off an 83-69 stunner at top-seeded St. Mary's on Thursday night, will travel to Salisbury, MD, to take on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University.
Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Maggs Center. Live stats and video will be available at www.CNUsports.com/live and the game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network with the pre-game show beginning at 4:10 p.m.
Christopher Newport bounced top-seeded St. Mary's Thursday night thanks to a fantastic defensive performance and a 20-point outburst from freshman
Aaron McFarland, who drained four three-pointers in the second half and six for the game. CNU connected on 13 triples for the night while handing the Seahawks their first home loss of the year (9-1) and snapping their 12-game winning streak.
"We really competed at the highest level," CNU Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "Now, it's on to Salisbury. I think this team is peaking at the right time...and we've got a lot left in the tank."
The Captains won two road games in last year's tournament before dropping the title game at Mary Washington in CNU's first year of league membership. For Salisbury, this will be the Sea Gulls first trip to the championship game in nine years, and the first trip for fourth-year head coach Josh Merkel.
John Krikorian's squad is now 20-7 for the season, and was seeded fourth in the six-team CAC field. The Sea Gulls, seeded second, are now 19-7 following a home win over Mary Washington in the semifinals Thursday night, 59-52.
Salisbury took both meetings with the Captains this year, but the Captains were shorthanded in both games. In December, the Sea Gulls prevailed at the Maggs Center in Salisbury as CNU played without injured starting center
Tim Daly. Earlier this month at the Freeman Center, Salisbury needed overtime to beat the Captains, who were playing without injured starting forward
Marcus Carter.
Christopher Newport ended Salisbury's season a year ago in the quarterfinals of the CAC Tournament by beating the Sea Gulls in Salisbury. CNU now leads the all-time series, 20-13.
The winner of Saturday's title game receives an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division III National Championship. The tournament bracket will be released on Monday morning.
