Box Score vs. Franklin & MarshallBox Score vs. Virginia WesleyanNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Taking on a pair of regionally-ranked opponents Saturday, the Christopher Newport men's tennis team came away with a pair of convincing wins. CNU (3-1) captured a 7-2 victory over 12th-ranked Franklin & Marshall College (0-1) and followed it up with an 8-1 win over 17th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan (1-1). The Captains are currently ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic South rankings.
In the first match of the day, CNU dropped one doubles and one singles match before dispatching the Diplomats. In doubles play,
Steven Boslet and
Chiraag Shetty paired at the No. 2 position to defeat Will Samuels and Vasant Rajamanickam, 8-3, while
Arttu Fiva and
Max Katcher won by the same score at No. 3, dropping Hamza Pataudi and Evan Drapeau.Â
Christopher Newport got straight set victories in lines 3-6 of singles play, including a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory for Fiva over Rajamanickam in the No. 4 position. At the top spot, rookie
David Reed battled against Doug Kaplan for Franklin & Marshall before coming away with a 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-3 win.Â
CNU then revved back up to play their cross-water rivals from Virginia Wesleyan College the same evening. Facing the regionally-ranked Marlins, Christopher Newport was up 3-0 after doubles. After quick wins at 2 & 3, Reed paired with
Justin Cerny to pull out a tight win at 1. The CNU tandem took on Graham Wilson and Kenneth Downing, taking a 9-7 win for the doubles sweep.Â
In singles action, the lone loss of the day came at No. 5, as the other five matches ended in wins for CNU. Katcher bounced back after a first-round setback to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Tyler Change, while Shetty cruised past Downing, 6-1, 6-3, for the win at No. 2. Reed was perfect in the No. 1 spot on the day, capturing a 6-4, 6-3 win over Wilson.
The Captains return to the court on Sunday morning at 11:00 am to face Methodist University.Â
