FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will face its second top-20 test of the week on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Captains take on No. 13 Mary Washington in a key Capital Athletic Conference showdown at the UMW Turf Stadium.
The Captains, who upended No. 18 Catholic on Monday, enter the match-up with an 11-2 record, including a 3-0 mark in conference action. Mary Washington sits at 11-3 on the season with an identical 3-0 record in CAC play.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS Christopher Newport is coming off of its sixth shutout of the season. Overall, the squad has limited the opposition to a 0.91 goals-against-average, which ranks 13th in the nation. Leading the way, junior goalie
Bailey Lien has a .760 save percentage and a personal 1.04 goals-against-average, which places her 19th in the NCAA.
Brittan Muir also ranks among the conference leaders with three defensive saves, while
Kana Hashigami and
Lauren Reinaman have one apiece.
On the offensive end, the Captains rank 21st nationally with a 3.38 goals-per-game average.
Carol Thompson leads the squad with eight goals, while
Lauren Cheatham boasts a team-high 17 points and five assists. Meanwhile, Muir and
Lisa Murphy also have four helpers apiece, and
Alexa Weaver is fourth on the team with 12 points.
Mackenzie Neylon and
Samantha Snider have eight points each as well.
LAST TIME OUT On Monday, CNU upended No. 18 Catholic, 1-0, in a crucial non-conference battle at Captains Turf Field. Cheatham connected with Muir on the game's lone goal in the first half. The defense took control from there as Lien made four saves, while the rest of the Captains smothered the Cardinal attack to seal the shutout.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES Mary Washington jumped two spots in the latest NFHCA rankings and is currently riding a five-game winning streak. The Eagles have been led by a potent offensive attack, which ranks sixth in the NCAA with a 4.36 goals-per-game average. Jenna Steele has been at the forefront with 18 goals, which places her in the top-15 nationally. Kathleen Namey also has 12 tallies for UMW, while Carlee Budd and Haley Kane have nine assists apiece.
On the defensive end, Jessica Cavolt and Caroline Freeman have split time in the cage and combined for a 0.83 goals-against-average and an .828 save percentage. Cavolt has been especially productive lately, posting back-to-back shutouts, including a 2-0 blanking of St. Mary's on Saturday.
SERIES HISTORY The Eagles and Captains have met 15 times with CNU holding a 10-5 edge in the series. Last season, the two teams split a pair of meetings as Mary Washington notched a 2-1 overtime victory in Newport News before Christopher Newport retaliated with a 3-0 triumph during the CAC Semifinals in Fredericksburg.
