Basketball Squads Look to Bounce Back...Captains Host Mary Washington Wednesday Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport's men's and women's basketball teams both return to the Freeman Center Wednesday night, and both will be looking to get back on the winning track. CNU hosts Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference play, with the women's game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the men's action beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Both CNU squads are coming off losses on Saturday at Marymount, and will look to get back on track in the friendly confines of the Freeman Center. The CNU men are 7-1 at home this year, and the women are 5-1 entering play against the Eagles.

John Krikorian's men's squad had a six-game winning streak snapped in a 62-60 loss at Marymount on Saturday. The Captains, now 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the CAC, are tied with St. Mary's for second place in the league standings. Marymount took over the top spot in the CAC with the triumph, and the Saints are now 7-1 in league action.

The Captains held the lead for most of the day on Saturday, and held a 12-point edge in the opening half. Marymount finally grabbed the lead for the first time with 7:11 to play and held off the Captains down the stretch. Senior Mike Cherry led the CNU attack with 13 points, including a three-pointer on the buzzer of the first half that was the 200th triple of his career. Cherry became just the third player in CNU history to reach the 200 three-point plateau behind Jermaine Woods (252) and Jeremy Romeo (228). Cherry also moved into 12th place on the school's all-time scoring list.

Christopher Newport will take on a Mary Washington men's team that got off to a terrible start, but has bounced back of late. The Eagles, who took the CAC Championship last season, are just 3-12 overall and 3-5 in the CAC but have won two straight games and three of their last five.

The CNU women are looking to bounce back from their worst offensive performance of the season on Saturday, scoring just 44 points in a 58-44 loss to the Saints. CNU is now 10-5 overall and 6-2 in the CAC. Bill Broderick's team is now tied with Marymount for third place in the CAC.

CNU senior Camry Green continued to dominate the boards on Saturday, posting 17 rebounds. Green, who went over the 1,000 point mark earlier this season, has now collected 889 career rebounds. Green struggled, as most of the team did offensively Saturday, posting just four points on two-of-eight shooting from the field. The Captains shot just 35 percent for the day vs. Marymount, making only 15 of 43 attempts.

The Mary Washington women's squad has sole possession of second place in the CAC standings with a 7-1 league mark, behind only 8-0 Salisbury. The Eagles are 11-4 overall and have won their last three games, most recently a 76-41 triumph at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday.

Live stats and live video webcasts of both games will be available at CNUsports.com/live. The men's contest will also be broadcast live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM).
