Sarah Perrett and junior
Lindsay Mondloch each scored twice for the Captains (5-2-2, 1-0-0), leading a dominant performance in the Capital Athletic Conference regular season opener.
The Captains did not allow a single shot to the offense that came into Saturday's game ranked 19th in the nation with over four goals per game. The defense posted its fourth shutout of the season, while the offense outshot the visiting Wolverines by a final count of 35-0.
Mondloch would get things started early in the game off of a corner kick for the Captains. After a shot by rookie
Danielle Pratt was saved by Wesley's goalkeeper Nasia Denegal, the Captains would send freshman
Kimmie Kerstiens to the left corner for a set piece attempt. She would play the ball to the top of the box for Mondloch, who lofted a perfectly placed shot into the right corner over Denegal for the score. It was just 3:21 into the match when Mondloch scored her first goal of the season on what would prove to be the gamewinner.
The CNU offense was relentless early, called for being offsides just a minute later, and converting on the following drive. Kerstiens again factored into the score, this time on the receiving end of a perfect pass from Pratt down the left side. The through ball found Kerstiens open on the left side from about six yards out, where the rookie pounded home her second career goal.
Denegal and the Wesley defense fended off a bunch of CNU opportunities over the next 20 minutes of action, but
Sarah Perrett would not be denied in the 33rd minute. After hitting the crossbar with a shot just minutes earlier, Perrett connected on a rebound to run the score to 3-0. Sophomore
Victoria Perry placed a gorgeous cross into the box for
Allie McWilliams, but the sophomore midfielders header ricocheted back off the left post. The bounce found the foot of Perrrett, who powered home her fifth goal of the season.
Not long after, Perrett picked up her second goal of the game on an unassisted strike, capping a four-goal first half for the Captains. She stole the ball from the defender in the box and slotted a pass under the sliding Denegal for the score.
With 24 shots in the first half, CNU put 15 on-goal and built a formidable four-goal advantage. Denegal made 11 saves for the Wolverines, while Perrett's two goals led the way for CNU.
In the second half, playing with a big lead, the Captains would control the action again but failed to get on the board again until the 76th minute. The final goal was one of the most impressive, as Mondloch hammered home a shot from nearly 40 yards away. Her blast came from the left side and tickled the twine of the upper right ninety in a near indefensible strike. The shot was assisted by senior defender
Erin O'Shaughnessy.
Defensively, the Captains managed to hold Wesley without a single shot, earning a combined shutout between two keepers.
Carly Maglio got the start and played the full first half, while
Haley Casanova finished up the game playing the full second half.
Christopher Newport will be back in action next Saturday, October 4, as they travel to York College (Pa.) for a Noon kickoff.
