YORK, Pa. -- In a rematch of the 2013 CAC Championship Game, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team would come out on top Saturday afternoon, capturing a 1-0 shutout over the York College (Pa.) Spartans on the road. The CNU defense had a stellar game, even taking care of the offensive end of the ball on Saturday, with defenders Sam Rabinek and Kira Warner combining to score the game's lone tally.

After a short burst from the home team to start the game, capped by a Jordan Snook shot turned away by CNU keeper Haley Casanova, the Captains offense took control of the first half. A six-minute stretch saw the Captains take three corner kicks and capitalize on a set piece in the 24th minute of action.

A foul by York led to a free kick for the Captains, taken by midfielder Lindsay Mondloch. Playing the ball like a corner, head coach Dan Weiler sent in the tall central defenders for a chance at a potential header on goal. Instead, Rabinek trapped Mondloch's initial pass and shuffled a pass to the left post where Warner was home to knock in the score.

The goal was the first of Warner's career, and stood up as the game-winning tally. From that point, the CNU defense took over, limiting Spartan opportunities to just four shots on-goal. Casanova stopped all four attempts, notching her first clean sheet of the season and the team's fifth shutout.

In the second half, the stout defensive effort was especially impressive, giving up up just one shot on-goal. In the game, the Captains held an 11-9 advantage in total shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on-frame.

CNU improves to 6-2-2 overall this season and will next take on Southern Virginia University on October 7. The Captains will host the Knights in CAC action at 5:30 pm.
