VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Sophomore Victoria Perry headlined an impressive shutout victory for Christopher Newport University on the second day of the 2014 Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialist Classic tournament hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College. The Captains (1-0-1) held DeSales University (0-2-0) scoreless while Perry carved up the Bulldogs defense, scoring her first career hat trick en route to a 4-0 victory.

With two goals in the first half and a second after intermission, the Captains second-year forward became the 13th player in CNU women's soccer history to score a hat trick. It is the fifth hat trick in the last three seasons for a CNU player, as Perry joins Emma O'Reilly (2), Dani Gunderson and Bupe Okeowo.

She scored back-to-back goals within a minute of eachother in the opening stanza, giving CNU a 2-0 cushion at halftime. Perry's first scoring strike came off an assist by sophomore midfielder Allie McWilliams. The second was started by Joy Piirto in the middle of the field as the senior played a ball to rookie Kimmie Kerstiens, whose touch found Perry wide open for the second score. The point was the first for Kerstiens career and Piirto's second straight game in the scoring column.

The Captains controlled the first half, taking 12 shots with ten of them put on-frame. Other than the two goals allowed, DeSales keeper Michell Churchman had a strong opening half, making eight saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

In the second half, CNU continued the offensive onslaught, outshooting DeSales by a final tally of 22-2. Perry completed her hat trick in the 76th minute of play, off an assist by senior Erin O'Shaughnessy. Then, rounding out the scoring for CNU was senior Sarah Perrett notching her first goal of the season in the 85th minute. Fellow senior Caitlyn Pabst sent a ball in the box for rookie Rachuel Tritt, who flicked it to the feet of Perrett for the goal.

Rookie netminder Carly Maglio was untested, facing just two shots in the match. The CNU offense saw ten different players register shots on-goal, including Perry's stellar performance with four attempts on-frame. McWilliams, Perrett, Lindsay Mondloch, Kate Hurlock and Danielle Pratt each also had a pair.

The CNU women's team exits the opening weekend with a 1-0-1 overall mark and will now turn focus on their own in-season tournament, the Captains Classic next weekend. CNU will host former conference rivals from Averett University on Saturday, September 6 at 3:00 pm, followed by a matchup with Kean University on Sunday, September 7 at 3:00 pm.
