Tournamen WebsiteNEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University softball team moved up a spot Wednesday in the new national rankings from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The Captains, who finished the regular season with a 32-6 record, are now ranked 13th in the nation after being 14th-ranked the last two weeks.
Keith Parr's squad is preparing for the 2014 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, which will be played at Captains Park beginning Thursday morning. CNU and Salisbury finished tied atop the league standings at 11-1, but Christopher Newport gained the right to host the five-team double-elimination tournament thanks to a coin flip.
Salisbury, 31-1 overall, remains the top-ranked team in the country in this week's poll. The Sea Gulls only defeat came on March 22nd at Captains park when the teams split a doubleheader.
Action will begin Thursday morning at Captains Park with 5th-seeded York playing 4th-seeded Mary Washington at 10 a.m. The game will be followed at 12 noon by 2nd-seeded Salisbury playing 3rd-seeded Frostburg State.
The Captains will play at 2 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the York/Mary Washington game. The final game Thursday, beginning at 4 p.m., will feature the losers of the first two games of the day.
The 2014 CAC Tournament will continue through Saturday at Captains Park. Tickets will be available at the gates each day ($5 for adults and $3 for students).
CNU's 32-win regular season marks the eighth straight year the Captains have won more than 30 games. It's the 16th time in the 30-year history of CNU softball the Captains have won at least 30 games.
