MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport men's tennis team won all six singles matches on Saturday, as the Captains cruised to a dominant 8-1 victory at St. Mary's College of Maryland in the Capital Athletic Conference regular season finale. CNU improved to 13-7 overall, and 5-1 in league play, while the Seahawks slipped to 4-6, 2-1.
Following three tightly contested matches in doubles play, the Captains eased to the team victory by sweeping singles play. Rookie
Steven Boslet highlighted the action, scoring a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 position, over Mark Hardesty.
Freshman
Arttu Fiva, at No. 5, and sophomore
Jake Smith, at No. 6, also had strong appearances for the Captains, dropping just one game apiece. The pair each finished with 6-0, 6-1 wins for CNU. Senior
Joona Rahko added a win by default at the No. 4 position.
Rounding out the singles sweep was senior
Joey Manilla, at No. 3, and sophomore
Chiraag Shetty, at the top spot. Manilla won a 6-1, 6-3 decision over John Feighner, while Shetty dropped the first set to Andrew Gear, but bounced back for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win for CNU.
In doubles play, all three matchups were tough, with CNU capturing a 2-1 lead in the match. Manilla and Shetty combined for an 8-6 victory at No. 1, followed by an 8-4 win for Boslet and Fiva at the No. 2 position. Robert Bishop and Wyatt Paulishak picked up the lone win on the day for St. Mary's, winning at No. 3 doubles.
The Captains will close out the regular season on Sunday, as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College at Noon. The CAC Tournament will begin next week, and CNU has already sealed up the number two seed in the postseason.
