CNU Women’s Lacrosse Heads to Frostburg State for a 1 p.m. Showdown on Saturday

FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to get back to its winnings ways on Saturday when the Captains head to Frostburg State for a Capital Athletic Conference clash at 1 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium.

CNU enters the contest with a 5-4 record, including a 1-1 mark in CAC play. Frostburg State sits at 1-8 with an 0-2 record in league action.

The two programs have battled four times in history with Frostburg State holding a 3-1 lead in the all-time series. However, Christopher Newport won the previous battle, 16-9, in 2007.

After kicking off conference action with a 14-3 victory at Wesley on March 15, the Captains slipped in their previous outing, 10-7, against St. Mary's last Saturday. During the contest, Ashton Marshall contributed her second straight hat-trick, while Kylie Chaplin scored a pair of goals for CNU. On the defensive end, Kirsten Mendelsohn and Morgan Smith each caused a pair of turnovers, and Hanna Slough added nine saves in goal.

So far this season, Marshall ranks second in the CAC with 23 goals, while Meaghan Galvin and Jessica Singer are tied in third with 22 apiece. Erin Callahan has been the team's chief facilitator, dishing out 13 assists, which ranks fifth in the league. Chaplin has also been outstanding on the attack, scoring 20 times while adding five assists.

On the defensive end, Emily Johnson has been tremendous, forcing 20 turnovers, which stands second in the league. Smith also sits fifth with 16 caused turnovers, while Mendelsohn and Singer have combined for 21. Slough has been the mainstay between the pipes, notching a .511 save percentage and a 9.53 goals-against-average. She ranks among the league leaders in both categories.

Frostburg State comes into the weekend after splitting its last two contests, including an 18-8 victory over New England College. Malory Brunett has been the squad's top offensive threat, scoring 20 goals while adding seven assists. Ellie Garner, Megan White, and Megan Hart have chipped in with 12 goals apiece as well.

Heather Lowe and Dylan Teitalbaum have split time in goal, combining for a .372 save percentage and a 15.56 goals-against-average. Emani Byrd has been the top enforcer along the back line, causing 18 turnovers while scooping up 24 ground balls.
