HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Christopher Newport University men's tennis team moved up to No. 8 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South regional rankings, released Thursday afternoon, and will travel to take on three regionally-ranked opponents this weekend.
The Captains (8-4) will first face off at Haverford College on Friday, March 28 at 3:00 pm. The Fords (4-2) are ranked No. 13 in the most recent Atlantic South rankings, and have won four of their last five matches. The only setback came to the ninth-ranked team in the nation, Kenyon on a neutral court.
CNU will then travel to New Jersey on Saturday, March 29, for a Noon tilt against The College of New Jersey (4-2). The Lions will host the Captains after slipping to No. 19 in the Northeast regional rankings on Thursday. After losing the first two matches of the season, TCNJ has run off four straight wins, losing just a pair of points in that run.
Finally, Christopher Newport will return to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for a match against the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday, March 30. Ranked No. 12 in Thursday's Atlantic South poll, the Diplomats are 3-3 this season, but have hit a rough patch in the schedule with three losses in the last four matches. Playing in their fourth straight home match, F&M will take on Washington College on Saturday prior to facing the Captains.
CNU has been led by rookie
Sam Thomson, who has checked into the ITA Regional Rankings for the first time in his career. The newcomer was tabbed the 21st-ranked singles player and, with teammate
Steven Boslet, the 12th-ranked doubles tandem.
Christopher Newport has won three of their last four, improving to 8-4 on the season. The three-game set on the road will all but round out the non-conference season, as CNU will then hit five straight league matches before closing out the regular season on the road versus Virginia Wesleyan.
