FREDERICKSBURG, Va.- Christopher Newport's wild ride through the Capital Athletic Conference's post-season tournament came to an end Saturday afternoon. The Captains, who had won road playoff games at Salisbury on Tuesday and at Wesley on Thursday, lost at Mary Washington, 65-48, in the title game.

Now, John Krikorian's squad will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The bracket will be unveiled on Monday, and the Captains resume includes a record of 19-9 and four wins over Top 25 ranked schools this season, with three of those wins coming on the road.

"I could not be more proud of our team," Krikorian said following the defeat. "We had an amazing week, and I think we just ran out of gas today. We got out-rebounded and just didn't seem to defend or be as quick as we have been."

CNU jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game before Mary Washington got rolling. The Eagles then surged to a nine-point lead before the Captains went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead. The Eagles held a 27-23 advantage at the half.

In the second half, UMW opened the lead with an 11-4 run to start the half, and then cruised to the 17-point lead. Mary Washington out-scored CNU in the second half, 38-25, and the Eagles used 11 of 23 shooting from three-point range for the game to pull away.

"They start four seniors and have five in all who see a lot of action," Krikorian continued. "That kind of experience is difficult to overcome. They are a tremendous team, and they certainly played with great intensity on their home court today."

Senior Bradley Riester led the way, scoring 14 points and knocking down four triples for the Eagles. UMW is now 22-5 overall and advances to the NCAA Tournament with the automatic bid.

Junior Mike Cherry and freshman Tim Daly led the CNU scoring with 10 points each.

The Captains made just 18 of 44 shots for 41 percent shooting for the day, while the Eagles connected on 22 of 38 shots for 58 percent.

CNU is 19-9 and will find out Monday if it will be enough to secure an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
