Captains Tennis Drop Pair to Division I Norfolk State University Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University tennis teams played host to NCAA Division I Norfolk State University on Saturday, dropping a pair of matches, 7-0.

The most competitive matchup of the day came in doubles on the men's side, as a pair of Christopher Newport freshmen battled with their Division I counterparts. At the No. 1 spot, rookies Steven Boslet and Sam Thomson forced a tiebreak when they tied things up at seven against Igor Braga and Robin Riethmueller. Then, in the tiebreak, the CNU tandem saved three set points before falling 8-7 (9-7). 

In singles play, the Captains got a strong showing in three matches from senior Joey Manilla and rookies Arttu Fiva and Thomson. At No. 3 singles, Thomson fell to Braga 6-4, 6-2, while Fiva won three games in each set against Samuel Lemberger at No. 5. Manilla, playing in the No. 4 spot, was taking on senior Peter Ramstromer-Pello and suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss. 

On the women's side, newcomer Katlyn Yarborough had the top showing for CNU, taking on Marie Habiyaremye in the No.  5 position. Yarborough won five games in her match, falling 6-4, 6-1. Senior Kelsey Clark also debuted for the Captains' tennis team, winning five games in her college tennis debut after a successful field hockey career. Clark suffered a 6-3, 6-2 setback to Ana Popovic at No. 6 singles.
