Men's Basketball Cruises to 73-57 Victory over York College

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport jumped to a 12-0 lead to start the game Saturday, and never looked back. The Captains improved to 13-5 overall and 6-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference with a 73-57 win over York College of Pennsylvania at the Freeman Center.

"It was a great crowd and they really fueled us," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the win. "I was pleased with our effort and how we attacked at the offensive end...we did a lot of good things today."

CNU led by ten at the half, 37-27, and then out-scored the Spartans in the second half, 36-30. The Captains enjoyed their biggest lead, 21 points, with just over five minutes to play in the second half. A crowd of 1,985, CNU's biggest of the season, watched the Captains beat York for the second time this season.

Sophomore Connor Laframboise led four Captains in double figures with 15 points, including four of seven from three-point range, and six rebounds. Junior Mike Cherry and sophomore Evan Thorpe added 13 points each, and senior Tra Benefield posted a dozen points.

Christopher Newport made 47 percent of its shots and out-rebounded the Spartans, 33-30, including a 13-7 edge on the offensive glass. Thorpe led CNU with seven boards for the day.

The Captains forced 14 York turnovers, and scored 26 points off those turnovers. The wire-to-wire triumph came in CNU's first of four games in an eight-day stretch.

"Obviously, this is an important week for us," Krikorian continued. "After the snow last week and all the practice time, our guys are ready to play in game situations...I think that really showed today. Our intensity level was where it needs to be every game."

CNU is now 12-0 this season when leading at halftime, and the Captains improved to 7-2 at the Freeman Center.

The Spartans, now 3-16 overall and 2-9 in the Capital were led by freshman Brad Wesner's 14 points. Freshman Dalton Myers was also in double digits with a dozen points.

CNU hosts Southern Virginia Monday night at the Freeman Center. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
