CNU Football Thankful for NCAA Trip to Widener for NCAA Second Round

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- For the third time in the 14-year history of the Christopher Newport football program, the Captains are headed to the second round of the NCAA Championship. CNU travels to Pennsylvania for the second straight Friday, and will play Widener University in Chester, PA., on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. at Leslie C. Quick, Jr., Stadium.

"We have a lot to be thankful for this year," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "We've been playing better and better each week and we're one of only 16 teams left. Saturday will be another great opportunity for us."

The Captains are 8-3 and have won five straight games, including a dramatic 29-26 come-from-behind triumph last Saturday at Delaware Valley College. Senior kicker Mason Studer booted a 38-yard field goal as time expired to advance the Captains past the Aggies to the second round. The kick completed a 19-point comeback by CNU in the second half.

Widener is 11-0 and also needed a late rally to advance last week. The Pride also used a field goal in the final seconds to oust Muhlenberg, 36-35.

It will be the second time the schools have met. CNU lost to Widener in the NCAA Tournament in 2001, the first season of the Captains football program.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The live audio will also be available at www.CNUsports.com/live.
