NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport's football squad returns to the playing field for the first time in two weeks on Saturday. The well-rested Captains, 7-3 and coming off a bye week after capturing the USA South Championship on November 8th, travel to Delaware Valley College for an NCAA first round game with the 9-1 Aggies. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
"We have done all the right things over the last two weeks," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said Thursday while preparing for the trip to his native state. "We got plenty of rest but also had some really productive practices. Now it's time for the test."
The Captains have won their last four games heading into their 10th NCAA Tournament in 14 years of program history. CNU defeated Maryville, 37-27, to wrap up the USA South title in the final season of membership in the league. Christopher Newport will play in the New Jersey Athletic Conference for football only beginning next fall.
Delaware Valley received one of only six at-large bids into the 32-team field. The Aggies are making thier sixth all-time NCAA appearance, and the game will be the first ever between the two programs. Delaware Valley had a nine-game winning streak snapped last Saturday with a 44-28 loss to Widener, who took the Championship of the Middle Atlantic Conference.
The Captains will be making their first trip to the tournament since 2012 when they were defeated in the opening round at Mount Union, the eventual National Champion.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and online at CNUsports.com/live. The pre-game show will begin at 11:30 a.m.
