NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- It's Homecoming Weekend at Christopher Newport University, and a "Blue Out" is scheduled for Saturday night at POMOCO Stadium. The Captains take on the Pride of Greensboro College in USA South Athletic Conference action. Fans are asked to wear blue for the 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
CNU is 4-3 overall and 4-1 tied with two other schools, Maryville and Huntingdon, atop the USA South standings. Greensboro enters play with a 1-5 overall mark and a 1-3 record in conference play.
"We can't take them lightly," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said. "They would love nothing more than to come in here and knock us off. We have to play like we did last week, get off to a good start, and take care of business."
The Captains downed Averett last Saturday, 38-7, in Danville. The decisive victory came during Averett's Homecoming and in the first night game ever hosted by the Cougars. Senior quarterback
Marcus Morrast threw for a score, and also ran for a touchdown. Sophomore
Daquan Davis rushed for two first half scores to put the Captains up early, providing a lead they would never relinquish.
Christopher Newport and Greensboro will be meeting for the 14th time, and the Captains have a perfect 13-0 mark against the Pride. Last year in Greensboro, CNU pounded the Pride, 42-13.
"Every week is a playoff game," Kelchner continued. "We have to compete at a high level with lots of intensity and things will go our way. I know our alumni and all of our fans will be out in big numbers to support us."
Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will be available at the entrance to POMOCO Stadium.
The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Action will also be streamed live at www.CNUsports.com/live.
