NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 13th-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team will cap off its regular season home slate this weekend when the Captains host Randolph-Macon on Friday and a tri-match with Marymount and Bethany on Saturday during an action-packed Homecoming Weekend at the Freeman Center.
CNU will kick off the festivities with a non-conference battle against Randolph-Macon on Friday at 7 p.m. The following afternoon, the Captains will take on Marymount in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt at 1 p.m. before heading back out on the court for a 5 p.m. showdown with Bethany. The squad will also host its Senior Day festivities on Saturday.
Christopher Newport enters Friday riding a six-match winning streak. Overall, the Captains sit at 24-3 on the season, including 6-0 in league action. Randolph-Macon comes in at 17-7 on the year, while Bethany is 20-11. Marymount enters Saturday at 23-7, including 5-1 in the CAC. The Saints currently sit in second in the conference standings.
For those fans unable to make it to the Freeman Center, live stats will be available for all matches at CNUsports.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
The Captains enter the homestand with some momentum after winning six straight, including five consecutive sweeps. On Wednesday, CNU continued its surge with a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's. During the match,
Maddie McCann ripped nine kills without a single attack error, while
Hannah Miller added eight blasts and hit at a .429 clip.
Rachel Conway also served up 26 assists and three aces.
So far this season, Conway leads the CAC with a 10.31 assists-per-set average. That is currently over two assists more than the next closest setter. Miller also sits atop the league in hitting percentage with a .375 mark. Both standouts rank among the national leaders as well with Conway 20th in assist average and Miller 13th in hitting percentage.
The three matches coming up will also serve as the final regular season home contests for CNU's Senior Class.
Krista Hughes,
Jessie Kolden, and
Brooke Moore have all been key contributors during the program's recent run of success. Kolden and Moore helped lead the Captains to three straight conference titles and back-to-back Final Four runs in their first three seasons. Hughes, who joined the team for the 2012 campaign, has also been an important factor on the last two conference championship squads.
During her three seasons, Hughes has appeared in 62 matches, including a crucial stretch late in 2012 when she took over a starting spot following an injury to All-American Bailey Jensen. She also followed that up by ranking fifth in the CAC with a 0.72 blocks-per-set average as a junior. Kolden, a 2012 All-American and two-time All-Conference selection, is the team's active leader with 880 kills. Her 446 blasts as a sophomore in 2012 rank seventh on CNU's single-season list.
Moore has been a reliable contributor on the back row while appearing in 143 matches since 2011. Earlier this season, she became just the 11th Captain to register 1000 career digs. She currently ranks 10th in CNU history with 1090.
Randolph-Macon enters Friday having won 10 of its previous 11 matches. Longtime rivals, the Captains and Yellow Jackets have faced off 23 times with CNU holding a 16-7 lead in the all-time series. Christopher Newport also picked up a 3-1 victory earlier this year against RMC at the Mary Washington Invitational.
So far this season, Randolph-Macon has been led by Courtney Lowers, who has 372 kills and 31 aces. Katie Rossberg has also added 256 kills, while Samantha Sallade has paced the back row with a 4.84 digs-per-set average.
Marymount enters Saturday on a minor two-match skid following setbacks against Muhlenberg and Southern Virginia. However, the Saints had won seven straight before that rough patch and still stand second in the league standings. In 21 all-time meetings against the Captains, MU leads the series 13-8.
Emileigh Rettig, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, currently ranks second in the conference with 309 kills. Marymount has also done fine work up front with Morgan McAlpin and Cailyn Thomas both averaging over a block per set. Cassidie Watson also ranks third in the conference with a 4.64 digs-per-set average.
Bethany will round out the action this weekend with a 5 p.m. match-up against CNU. The Bison, who have never played the Captains, come in after winning four of their last five matches. Dakota McKenzie has been the squad's top performer with 296 kills and a .238 hitting percentage. Her twin sister, Dylana, ranks second on the team with 261 kills to go along with 39 blocks. Mackenzie Lauber has also averaged 10 assists per set for BC, while Julia Mouch has a 5.43 digs-per-frame average.
Following this weekend's action, Christopher Newport will wrap up the regular season with a Thursday trip to Mary Washington and a Saturday battle at York (Pa.).
