CNU Football Travels to Averett for Saturday Night Showdown

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- With four games remaining on the 2014 regular season schedule, the Christopher Newport University football team truly has to look at each contest as a playoff battle. The Captains had their three-game winning streak snapped last Saturday at Huntingdon, and will look to rebound at Averett Saturday night. Kickoff time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Daly Field in Danville.

"There is a lot of football to be played," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "We've got to take care of business every week and focus on improving our football team. Averett will be a tough test for us...it's another road game, and they have improved from where they were. We need to play well."

CNU fell behind early last week at Huntingdon and ended up on the losing side of a 51-31 verdict. The Hawks scored on eight of 11 possessions in the game, and the Captains were unable to stop their offensive attack. The loss dropped Christopher Newport to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in the USA South, one of four teams with a 3-1 conference mark.

Averett was off last week, and the Cougars have lost their last four after starting the season with a victory over Washington & Lee. It will be the first home night game in Averett football history, and will also be Homecoming Weekend in Danville. The Cougars are 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the USA South under first-year head coach Cleive Adams.

The Captains have won 11 of 13 previous meetings with the Cougars, including a 24-7 triumph last season at POMOCO Stadium. CNU has won the last three meetings with Averett, and seven of the last eight.

The game will be broadcast live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and on the web at www.CNUsports.com/live. The pre-game show will begin at 5:30 p.m.
