NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team will open up a two-game homestand on Friday evening when CNU welcomes Centre to town for a 6 p.m. non-conference showdown at Captains Turf Field.
Following a 4-1 setback against top-ranked Salisbury on Tuesday, CNU enters the game with an 8-5 record. Centre, who dropped a 4-2 decision to Bellarmine on Sunday, currently stands at 10-4 on the season. The Colonels will face Randolph-Macon on Thursday afternoon in a neutral site battle in Newport News before taking on the Captains on Friday.
Overall, CNU and Centre have met three times with the Captains holding a 3-0 lead in the all-time series. Last season, the two programs met in the NCAA Sweet 16. Christopher Newport eventually picked up the victory with a 1-0 triumph at Captains Turf Field.

In their last outing on Tuesday, the Captains were tied with No. 1 Salisbury early in the second half before the Sea Gulls managed three unanswered goals to seal the victory. Despite the setback,
Savanah Cummings pieced together a tremendous performance. The sophomore goalie registered 17 saves, which stands as the sixth-highest single-game total in CNU history.
Along with Cummings,
Sarah Miller had a strong outing against Salisbury as well. She scored the team's lone goal on a penalty stroke early in the second half and also tallied a defensive save.
Alexa Hendrickson also contributed her team-leading fourth defensive save of the season during the contest.
So far this season,
Belle Tunstall leads the team with 16 points, including six assists. She is also tied with
Taylor Williams for the team-lead with five goals. Overall, seven Captains have scored at least twice this season, including freshmen
Alexa Weaver and
Carol Thompson. Senior
Allie Hackbarth also boasts two goals and a pair of assists for CNU.
On the defensive end, Cummings currently leads the CAC and ranks among the top-10 nationally with an .885 save percentage. She has surrendered just seven goals in 492 minutes of work and posted a pair of shutouts last week en route to the CAC Defensive Player of the Week award.
Bailey Lien also has a .771 save percentage during 397 minutes between the pipes.
Centre has been led this season by Kelsey Gordon, who has compiled 11 goals and 23 points. Julie Gates has also scored 10 times for the Colonels, while Erin Mays boasts a team-high four assists. On the defensive end, Kirby Roberts has a .650 save percentage and four shutouts. The sophomore has limited the opposition to 1.63 goals-per-game during her time in the cage.
Following Friday's contest, Christopher Newport will return to action on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. contest against St. Mary's at Captains Turf Field.
