CNU Men's and Women's Basketball Teams Travel to St. Mary's for Monday Night Doubleheader

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport basketball teams hit the road again Monday. The Captains, fresh off a doubleheader sweep at Frostburg State on Saturday, play another Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader...this time at St. Mary's College. The women's game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the men's game at 8 p.m. in St. Mary's City, MD.

The games were originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but were postponed due to snow. Both CNU squads will be playing the second of three games in a five-day span.

Bill Broderick's women's team is 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the Capital. CNU is all alone in second place in the conference standings, behind only undefeated York College. Christopher Newport's women's team was ranked 16th in the nation last week, and is now riding a nine-game winning streak.

The CNU women are coming off the ninth-best individual scoring effort in program history, as senior Nicole Mitchell's career-high 38 points paced one of the finest offensive explosions in the 42-year history of Christopher Newport University women's basketball. The Captains poured in 116 points, racing past Frostburg State by 27 points, 116-89, with the fourth most points ever scored in a game by CNU women's hoops.

CNU will be playing a St. Mary's squad that is 6-9 overall and 3-5 in the Capital.

On the men's side, John Krikorian's squad is now 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Capital standings. The Captains face a stiff challenge, as St. Mary's was the CAC Champion last season, and selected by the league's coaches in their pre-season poll to win the conference title again this year. The Seahawks are also 12-4 overall and 6-2 in league play, and ranked 24th in the country last week.

St. Mary's and Christopher Newport have met 12 times in men's play, and the all-time series is even at 6-6.

Senior Tra Benefield and junior Mike Cherry continue to lead the CNU attack. Both scored 23 points in CNU's decisive win Saturday at Frostburg State, 84-41.

Benefield, a pre-season All-America selection, is currently 8th on the school's all-time scoring list, and needs just 12 points to match Davon Barton, who is 7th on the list.

Cherry became just the 29th player in Christopher Newport men's history to reach 1,000 career points when he scored on a layup in the second half Saturday. He came into the game needing 20 points to reach 1,000. The Lewiston, NC, native hit seven of 13 shots for the day and also made five of eight from three-point range. He now has 1,003 career points in 72 total games played for a career average of 13.9 points per game.

Both games will be broadcast live Monday night on www.CNUsports.com/live.
