NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After seeing their contest earlier in the week postponed due to poor winter weather, the Christopher Newport basketball teams now venture on to the Allegheny mountain range for a doubleheader against Frostburg State. The women's game will tip at 1:00 pm on Saturday, followed at 3:00 pm by the men's matchup.
Live stats will be available, with links found at CNUsports.com or on the Frostburg State Athletics website.
Earlier this season, the Captains swept the home doubleheader against the Bobcats, as the men's team was led by 20 points from sophomore
Connor Laframboise, hitting six three-pointers. On the women's side, CNU forced 35 turnovers and ran away with an 82-44 conference victory.
The CNU women will look to shake off the cold weather forecast and stay red hot on the hardwood, looking for their ninth straight victory. Defensively, the Captains have been stellar in their current win streak, lowering their opponents scoring average to 59.3 points per game on the year. CNU ranks 19th nationally in scoring margin, balancing their strong defensive effort with one of the most potent attacks in the nation, pouring in 78.1 points per game.
Senior
Tia Perry ranks 41st in the country in steals per game, helping the Captains rank 11th nationally as a team with 14.0 thefts per contest. Perry is also the team leader in scoring, averaging nearly 17 points per game.
The Frostburg State women's basketball team are coached by CNU Athletics Hall of Famer and former head coach Cathy Parson. In her first year with the Bobcats, she has guided the squad to a 3-11 start with a 1-7 mark in league play. Three FSU players are averaging in double figures, led by Elaina Hummel's 15.9 points per game.
The CNU men's team shrugged off a modest three-game losing streak last week when they bounced back with a 76-69 win over Marymount. The Captains have been led all season by senior preseason All-American
Tra Benefield, pouring in 18.5 points per game and grabbing a team-high 7.5 rebounds per contest. Junior
Mike Cherry is inching closer to a career milestone, now just 20 points shy of 1,000 for his career. He is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game.
Bobcats' head coach Webb Hatch has seen the men's team struggle to a 2-14 overall record this season, going 1-7 in league play. James Peters, with 14.2 points, and Jabari Kamau, with 13.3 points, are the only two Bobcats in double figures, powering an offense that is chipping in just 67.7 points per game.
Tip is set for 1:00 pm in Bobcat Arena on the campus of Frostburg State University.
