NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After suffering just its second loss of the season to close out the non-conference schedule, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team will look to bounce back with a win in their first ever game as a Capital Athletic Conference member. The Captains (5-2-1) will travel to Marymount University (2-4-0) for a 4:00 pm kickoff on Saturday, September 28 to launch their first season in the CAC.
In the first year under head coach
Dan Weiler, Christopher Newport has just one loss in their last five games, coming at the hands of 11th-ranked Lynchburg College. Weiler has guided CNU to one of the finest starts in program history heading into conference play, with five wins in the first eight games of 2013.Â
Offensively, the Captains boast one of the league's leading scorers in senior
Emma O'Reilly. She has not slowed since breaking the CNU goal scoring in the first game of the year, putting away a team-high seven goals this season. Fellow senior
Bupe Okeowo has also scored three times to help lead the way offensively, adding one assist.
On the defensive end, freshman
Sam Rabinek has helped lead a back line that has allowed just seven goals this season. Juniors
Kelsey Thomas,
Erin O'Shaughnessy and sophomore
Abby Johnson have helped lock down the defensive unit, holding opponents to under six shots on-goal per game. Rookie keeper
Haley Casanova has four shutouts so far, with a 0.85 goals against average.Â
CNU will take on the Saints of Marymount University in their first ever CAC game. The conference foes have won two straight games after opening the year on a four-game losing streak, and lean heavily on a young core of players. A pair of freshman lead the team offensively, as Kirsten Campbell and Chloe McAuliffe have each scored two goals and added one assist.Â
The game will be played at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va.Â
