NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Captains embark on a new voyage Monday, July 1, as Christopher Newport University Athletics officially joins the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). After accepting an invitation to join the league in April of 2012, CNU officially begins their new journey on Monday.
The CAC was formed in 1989, and is a coalition of four-year, co-educational institutions. CNU, along with Southern Virginia University and Penn State Harrisburg, will join a league that includes Frostburg State University, the University of Mary Washington, Marymount University, Salisbury University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Wesley College and York College of Pennsylvania.
Getting to know the Capital Athletic Conference
The CAC strives to develop a harmony of good feeling and a spirit of competitive sportsmanship, fellowship and uniformity of practice among member institutions. Conference members are required to operate their intercollegiate athletic programs under the highest ethical standards and to maintain a program consistent with the overall educational philosophy of the member institutions
Charter members were: The Catholic University of America, Gallaudet University, Mary Washington College, Marymount University, St. Mary's College of Maryland and York College of Pennsylvania.
In 1991-92, the first Conference All-Sports Award, given annually to the Conference institution that accumulates the most points toward the "total" athletic program, was awarded to Mary Washington College. Since its inception, the Eagles have won the All-Sports Award a record 12 times, while Salisbury University has also won it 10 times.
The league features 17 NCAA Division III National Championship Teams in its history, including a dominating nine men's lacrosse national titles since 1994-95. The league currently sponsors championships in 22 different sports including all of Christopher Newport's active sports except football.
The standard of excellence established by the Capital Athletic Conference was again on display in 2012-13, as a pair of league programs ranked in the Top 60 of the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings. Salisbury finished the year 12th among all Division III programs and Mary Washington 60th; Christopher Newport ranked 29th in 2012-13.
