CNU Women’s Lacrosse Opens Up the NCAA Tournament at Home on Wednesday Against Sewanee

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
The 15th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will open up the NCAA Tournament at home on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when CNU battles Sewanee in the first round at Captains Turf Field.

Playing a postseason game at home for the first time since 2009, Christopher Newport enters the contest with a 17-2 record and earned an automatic bid after claiming the USA South championship. Sewanee, which is making its first NCAA appearance, comes into play at 13-6 and earned its postseason berth after securing the Southern Athletic Association crown.

The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the regionals, which begin on Saturday, May 11. The advancing team will square off with the winner of the Salisbury - Cabrini first-round bout.

Sewanee and Christopher Newport have only met twice in history with the Captains holding a 2-0 record in those showdowns. During their last meeting, CNU upended the Tigers, 19-17, in 2009. The squads also battled in Newport News in 2008 with the Captains securing a 21-8 victory.

Christopher Newport is led by a well-balanced roster, which ranks in the top-five nationally in scoring offense and scoring margin while sitting sixth in scoring defense. Ashton Marshall has led the attack, tallying a team-high 70 goals. Elena Obregon has also chipped in with 50 scores, while Lauren King and Becca Geist have doled out 30 assists apiece.

On the defensive end, Hanna Slough ranks sixth nationally with a 6.57 goals-against-average. She has also notched a .474 save percentage while helping the squad surrender five goals or less on nine occasions. Emily Johnson also leads the Captains with 26 caused turnovers and 49 ground balls, while Stephanie Green, Monica Evans, Kelly Lane, and Rachel Tomlinson have excelled on the defensive end as well.

Sewanee's offense also ranks among the top-20 nationally in points with 399. Olivia Vietor leads the way with 69, including 43 goals. Molly Arnold has also scored 43 times this season, while Mallory Grimm sits second on the team with 62 points and 22 assists.

Anchoring the team in goal, Sammy Strasburger is 33rd nationally with 153 saves. She has allowed just a shade over 11 goals per game and boasts a .421 save percentage. Sally Anne Greenwood has also been a force for the Tigers, leading the team with 34 caused turnovers and 89 draw controls.
