NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team concluded the 2013 regular season with two wins over Methodist Sunday afternoon. CNU took the opener, 4-1, and then cruised to a 16-6 triumph in the nightcap at Captains Park.
Junior
Kristina McLaughlin and sophomore
Sabrina Hill stole the spotlight on Senior Day. McLaughlin drove in all four runs in the opener, and Hill smashed two three-run home runs in game two.
The Captains conclude the regular season with a record of 28-11 and a conference mark of 18-3. CNU will be seeded third in the USA South Tournament beginning Friday in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. CNU will play the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan, seeded sixth, on Friday at 11 a.m.
First game starter
Whitney Haller, one of six seniors honored before the doubleheader, went the distance in the opener. She scattered five hits and held the Monarchs to just one run, a third inning home run from Krista Zentner. Haller raised her record to 11-5 with the victory.
Kristina McLaughlin gave the Captains a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the first inning. She then drove in two more with another single in the fourth to account for all of the Captains scoring in the 4-1 triumph.
In the second game, the Captains offense erupted by scoring three runs in the first, five in the second, and then eight more in the third inning. CNU cruised to the 16-6 win as the game was halted in the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
13 batters came to the plate in the eight-run third inning as CNU blew the game open. The Captains finished the second game with 16 runs on 17 hits.
Sabrina Hill hit her first three-run home run in the second inning after
Kristina McLaughlin had been intentionally walked ahead of her. She stepped to the plate in the very next inning, again with two runners on base, and delivered her second three-run blast in as many innings. Hill now has seven home runs for the season.
Sophomore
Candice Zollars drove in two runs with a single in the third inning, and
Chelsea Mitchell and McLaughlin also drove in runs with singles in the big inning.
Senior pitchers
Elizabeth Holte,
Melanie Hazelwood, and
Krista Townsend all saw action in the circle in game two. Hazelwood earned the victory to improve to 8-1.
Methodist starters Jessica Farmer and Brittany Miller took the losses. The Monarchs conclude the regular season with a 21-19 overall record and a 12-10 conference mark. The Monarchs will be seeded fifth in the upcoming tournament.
Christopher Newport ended the season with a flourish, winning 11 of its last 12 games.
