NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport pitching allowed just two runs on Saturday, as the Captains swept a USA South doubleheader over Greensboro College. CNU took the opener, 6-1, and then the nightcap, 7-1, at Captains Park.

Krista Townsend and
Melanie Hazelwood each went the distance to earn the victories. Townsend, who struck out 11 and allowed only three hits, iimproved to 8-4. Hazelwood is now 7-1.
The Captains, who conclude the regular season on Sunday with a home doubleheader vs. Methodist, scored 13 runs on 15 hits in the twin bill.
In the opener, junior
Kelley Foate smacked a two-run home run in the third inning to provide all the runs Townsend would need. Foate reached base in all four at bats, as she was hit by pitches three times in addition to the home run. She scored three of the Captains six runs.
CNU stranded 11 runners in game one, as Greensboro starter Kelsey Sanfilippo twice wiggled out of bases-loaded jams. Sanfilippo took the loss to fall to 4-5.
In the nightcap, senior
Lauren Stewart provided the key hit with a two-run single in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. The Captains then added four runs in the sixth to blow the game open and cruise to a 7-1 triumph.
Senior catcher
Chelsea Mitchell was three-for-four with three runs batted in game two, giving her four hits in the doubleheader.
The Captains finished with 10 hits in game two off Pride pitcher Hannah Pennell, who falls to 7-7 on the season. Greensboro College is now 16-14 overall and 10-9 in the USA South.
Christopher Newport is now 26-11 overall and 16-3 in the USA South. CNU will host Methodist Sunday in the regular-season finale. The USA South doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the first game, ceremonies will take place honoring six senior Captains.
