NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team got its regular season-ending, eight-game homestand underway in fine fashion Wednesday. The Captains swept Mary Washington at Captains Park by scores of 7-0 and 5-1 in non-conference action.
CNU is now 23-10 on the season, and Christopher Newport has won six straight games.
The Captains got started quickly, scoring three runs in the first inning of the opener. CNU then added single runs in the second and fourth innings and plated two more in the sixth for the 7-0 triumph. Christopher Newport posted 11 hits in the opener, including three each from
Candice Zollars and
Chelsea Mitchell.
Kristina McLaughlin,
Sabrina Hill, and Mitchell each knocked in two runs.
Whitney Haller threw six shutout innings in game one, allowing just three hits. Haller struck out four, and retired 12 of the last 13 batters she faced. The victory improves her record for the year to 10-4.
Mary Washington starter Hannah Otterman took the loss for the Eagles to fall to 7-10.
In the nightcap, CNU again jumped to an early lead by scoring a run in the first and second and then three in the third en route to the 5-1 win. The Captains totaled nine hits, and left eight runners on base.
Four different Captains (
Kelley Foate,
Meagan Jones,
Sabrina Hill, and
Lauren Stewart) each had two hits.
Alexis Pope knocked in two runs for CNU.
Krista Townsend earned the win by pitching the first six innings, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out seven. Her record is now 7-4.
Eagles starter Annie Blaine went the distance and falls to 1-6 with the loss. Mary Washington falls to 9-16 on the season.
The Captains return to USA South Athletic Conference play on Thursday with a first-place showdown. CNU will play Ferrum in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Captains Park. The Captains are 13-2 in league play and Ferrum is in first place at 14-2.
