ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- In the opening round of the USA South Tournament, the second-seeded Christopher Newport Captains (15-6) cruised to a 9-0 sweep over host and seventh-seeded N.C. Wesleyan (5-10). CNU will advance to play third-seeded Meredith College in Saturday's semifinals, at 2:00 pm.

Angela Stallman and senior
Melisande Downs were forced to a ninth point before pulling out a 9-7 win over Dori Brooks and Tija Riley. CNU earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 and an 8-5 win at No. 2, as seniors
Kim Morrissett and
Marion Gloor combined for the win at the top spot.
In singles action, the Captains wrapped up the win early, getting a straight set win from rookie
Jackie Gaine at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0) over Bristy Parker.

At the No. 6 position, sophomore
Angela Stallman extended her singles win streak in a hard-fought battle with Dori Brooks. It took a tiebreak, but Stallman defeated Brooks, 9-8 (7-1) for her 18th straight win this year. She is just one shy of Erin Spinks (2010) for the third longest streak in CNU Women's Tennis history.
