Captains fall to CMS, but defeats Cortland State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The seventh-ranked Christopher Newport softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the 2013 NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic, falling 3-0 to Claremont Mudd Scripps, but defeating Cortland State, 4-2.

In game two, the Captains got out to a 2-0 lead behind solo home runs from junior Kristina McLaughlin and freshman Alexis Pope. Haller picked up the win, holding the 23rd-ranked Red Dragons to just three hits.

Christopher Newport improves to 8-3 to start the season, and will advance to play DePauw University at 10:00 am on Saturday. The final three games of the tournament will be determined on Saturday, and CNU will play the first on Saturday afternoon.
