STAUNTON, Va.- The 21st-ranked Christopher Newport softball squad swept a USA South doubleheader Saturday at Mary Baldwin College. The victories completed a four-game road weekend sweep for CNU, as the Captains raised their overall record to 21-10 and 13-2 in conference action.
Christopher Newport took game one by a 13-0 margin, and then took the second game by a 16-0 score. Both games were shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule.
CNU scored 10 first inning runs in the opener and never looked back, cruising to the 13-0 triumph.
Meagan Jones had three hits including a triple, knocked in three, and scored two runs in the opener.
Sabrina Hill smacked a three-run home run, her fifth of the season.
In the second game, the Captains plated eight runs in the third inning en route to the 16-0 win. CNU used home runs from
Taylor Dillow,
Alexis Pope, and
Kristen Olsen to provide the offensive firepower.
The Captains registered 29 runs on 27 hits in the twin bill.
Whitney Haller and Elizabth Holte combined to throw the first game shutout, and then
Melanie Hazelwood and
Hanah Marshall split duties in the circle in game two. Haller (9-4) and Hazelwood (5-1) earned the victories for CNU.
Christopher Newport returns home for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday vs. Mary Washington. The first game will begin at 3 p.m. at Captains Park.
