NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The 10th-ranked Sea Gulls of Salisbury took both ends of a Wednesday softball doubleheader at Christopher Newport Wednesday afternoon. Salisbury won the opener, 12-2, and then took the nightcap, 11-4.
The Captains, ranked 24th in the country, fall to 17-10 following the non-conference defeats. The Sea Gulls are now 18-2.
Salisbury jumped to an early lead in the opener thanks to a three-run, first inning home run from Hannah Mills. CNU battled back with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single off the bat of
Kristina McLaughlin to make it a 3-2 game.
The Sea Gulls pulled away with two more in the second inning, single runs in the fifth and sixth, and then plated five in the seventh to win, 12-2. Salisbury finished the opener with 12 runs on 18 hits off CNU pitching.
Captains starter
Krista Townsend took the loss to fall to 5-4 on the year. Salisbury starter Rachel Johnson went the distance to improve to 10-1, allowing just the two first inning runs and scattering seven hits.
In the nightcap, Salisbury used the long ball to put away the Captains. Three home runs, two from Michelle Gravdahl, provided the fireworks in the 11-4 victory. Gravdahl finished with six runs batted in the second game and was four-for-five at the plate. She finished the day six-for-nine with seven runs scored and seven runs batted in.
Mills also homered in game two, a two-run shot in the third inning, her second of the day.
Captains catcher
Chelsea Mitchell was three-for-four in the second game. She hit a two-run home run in the first inning and also drove in a run with a double in the third.
CNU's
Whitney Haller, who entered the game in relief in the fourth inning, gave up eight runs to take the loss. Only two of the eight were earned, as the Captains committed two costly errors in a six-run fifth inning for the Gulls. Haller is now 7-5 on the season.
Johnson also pitched in the nightcap for Salisbury, entering in the fourth inning, and earned her second win of the day to go to 11-1 for the year.
Salisbury finished the twin bill with a total of 23 runs on 30 hits.
Christopher Newport returns to USA South Athletic Conference play this weekend, playing doubleheaders at Averett on Friday and Mary Baldwin on Saturday.
