Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Jessica Singer set a new career-high with five goals while leading a potent offensive attack as the 16th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team took down Meredith, 21-3, on a damp Sunday afternoon at Captains Turf Field.

During the game, Singer was 3-for-4 on free-position attempts on the way to her game-high five goals. Six other Captains also had multi-goal efforts, including Elena Obregon and Nina Stinson, who both finished with three apiece. Becca Geist also chipped in with a pair of goals to go along with three assists. The defensive stalwart also caused three turnovers during a well-rounded performance.

The victory marks the 10th straight for the Captains this season and the program's 40th consecutive win during conference action dating back to 2006. Overall, CNU now sits at 10-1 on the season, including 5-0 in the USA South. Meredith is 4-8 with a 3-4 mark in league play.

Similar to yesterday's game, Christopher Newport had a minor hiccup early before rolling to a lop-sided halftime lead. After Ashton Marshall opened the scoring with an assist by Elena Obregon, Meredith's Katie Burnet evened the score less than two minutes later. From there, the Captains put their offense on full display during an amazing 12-goal surge.

Singer opened the run with two straight tallies before Rachel Tomlinson came through with an assist and goal on back-to-back plays to give the hosts a 5-1 lead at the 20-minute mark. After Grace Valentine and Singer fired a pair of darts in less than 60 seconds to push the lead to six, CNU showed off a little run-and-gun action to keep the surge going.

After Hanna Slough brushed aside a Meredith shot, Stephanie Green scooped up the loose ball and started a fast-break. The senior tossed an outlet pass to Geist, who went screaming up the sideline. With Lauren King breaking free across the middle, Geist lobbed a gorgeous toss to her teammate, who immediately unleashed a rocket on the run to push the advantage to seven.

On the ensuing draw, the Captains followed the same script. After Emily Johnson secured the ball, she fed it straight to Marshall, who came free in the middle of the field. In-stride, the junior secured the pass and uncorked a one-timer to push the score to 9-1.

After that point, the pace settled down for a bit, but Christopher Newport continued its hot streak. Singer converted back-to-back free-position attempts before Stinson and Valentine each lit up the scoreboard as well. Although Burnet was able to snap the streak with her second goal of the game for the Avenging Angels, Geist capped off the first-half scoring with a goal just before the horn sounded to give CNU an imposing 14-2 edge.

Following their late scores in the first half, Stinson and Geist kicked things off again in the second with a pair of tracers during the first five minutes of the period. Later, after Meredith got on the board for the final time, CNU put the game away.

First-year phenoms Stinson and Chaplin added two late scores before King chipped in with her second goal of the contest. Leading 19-3 with time running down, Obregon finished off the scoring. After her fellow classmates opened the squad's late-game push, the freshman standout came through with back-to-back goals in the final three minutes to seal the 21-3 victory.

Overall, Obregon matched her season-high with six points after collecting three goals and three assists. Geist's five points and three assists also set new season bests and just missed equaling her top career efforts.

On the defensive end, Monica Evans led the team with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Johnson and Valentine also forced three turnovers apiece. Once again, Slough was sturdy in the goal, notching three saves on the way to the victory.

During the game, CNU out-shot Meredith, 37-8, and held a 35-22 lead in ground balls. Andie Stuber also made three saves for the visitors, while Burnet finished with two goals and five ground balls.

Christopher Newport will continue its home stand on Friday when the Captains welcome LaGrange to town at 2:30 p.m.
