NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team improved its record to 17-8 overall, and 9-2 in the USA South, with a doubleheader sweep Saturday. The Captains defeated the Scots of Maryville by scores of 7-4 and 8-1 at Captains Park.

CNU fell behind in the opener in the first inning when Maryville's Caitlin Cox smacked a two-run home run off Captains starter Whitney Haller. The home run was the only long ball of the day. The Captains bounced back and scored in each of the first five frames, and posted at least one hit in every inning. The Scots were hurt by four errors in the opener, as the Captains pulled away to a 7-2 lead through five innings. Maryville plated two runs in the sixth to make the final 7-4.

Three Captains, Candice Zollars, Taylor Dillow, and Kristina McLaughlin, registered two hits for Christopher Newport as the Captains finished with 12 hits in the opener. Meagan Jones reached base in all four of her plate appearances.

Whitney Haller and Melanie Hazelwood combined to allow four runs on nine hits to the Scots. Haller picked up the win to improve to 7-3, while Hazelwood earned her first save of the season.

In the second game, Krista Townsend threw five strong innings to get the victory, allowing just one run on three hits to improve to 5-3 for the season. Elizabeth Holte pitched the final two innings and retired all six batters she faced as the Captains breezed to the 8-1 triumph.

CNU scored four runs in the first inning and then added four more in the third to put the game away. The Captains again capitalized on three Maryville errors, and also posted eight hits in the nightcap.

The Captains finished with a total of 15 runs on 20 hits in the twin bill.

The Scots are now 1-27 on the season and 1-13 in the USA South. Maryville committed seven errors in the doubleheader and only six of CNU's 15 total runs scored were earned.

Christopher Newport's scheduled doubleheader Sunday with Ferrum has been postponed due to heavy rain in the forecast. The Captains and Panthers will meet instead on April 4th at 3 p.m. at Captains Park.

CNU's next action will come on Wednesday, when the Captains will host Salisbury in non-conference play. Game time at Captains Park is set for 2 p.m.
