Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The sixth-ranked Christopher Newport softball team picked up a pair of wins in the 2013 Beach Blast Tournament on Saturday, defeating Randolph-Macon, 10-5, and Old Westbury, 5-0. The Captains improved to 5-1 on the season, and will take on William Peace University (1-12-1).
The Captains put together a strong offensive effort against the Yellow Jackets, putting a season-high 12 hits on the board. Senior catcher
Chelsea Mitchell led the way, blasting a three-run home run for the Captains, while
Sabrina Hill,
Kelley Foate and
Amber Arevalo added multi-hit efforts. Hill was 3-for-4, Foate 2-for-3 and Arevalo added a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate.
Krista Townsend got the win in game one, pitching five innings of relief, allowing just two runs. In the pitching circle for game two, the Captains looked to freshman
Hanah Marshall for her first career start. The rookie was stellar, pitching a complete game two-hitter, striking out six for her first collegiate win.
Offensively, junior shortstop
Candice Zollars was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, and again, the CNU offense put 12 hits on the board. Rookie
Tori Clarke was 2-for-3 while
Kelsey Lewis added a 3-for-5 performance at the dish.
Kristina McLaughlin and
Alexis Pope also added two-hit days.
