Box Score
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ashton Marshall totaled a team-high eight points, while
Elena Obregon and
Kylie Chaplin each scored four times as the No. 19 Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team posted its eighth straight victory after running away from Greensboro, 21-4, on Sunday afternoon at Pride Field.
During the game, Marshall scored five goals and added three assists. She now has 153 goals for her career, becoming only the fifth player in program history to reach the 150-goal plateau. She is also just the second junior to reach that benchmark, joining former standout Kaitlin Quigley.
In addition to Marshall and the two freshman gunners,
Lauren King and
Grace Valentine each chipped in with four points apiece, while
Jessica Singer added three. With her three assists, Valentine matched her career-high set against Agnes Scott earlier this season. Chaplin also set a new personal best with her four goals, while Obregon equaled her high watermark.
With the victory, CNU now stands at 8-1 on the season, including 3-0 in the USA South. Greensboro falls to 1-8 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Scoring early and often, Christopher Newport jumped on top right out of the gate. Valentine and King scored the first two goals, and after Greensboro got on the board, Marshall came through with back-to-back bullets to guide the team to a 4-1 lead at 20:29.
After Singer, Chaplin, and
Emily Johnson gave the Captains some more wiggle room with a string of goals in the middle of the period, Marshall took control again. The junior juggernaut tacked on three straight scores, including a pair set up by King. Matching the veteran goal-for-goal, Chaplin orchestrated her own three-score surge, taking advantage of two assists by Valentine and a third by Singer.
With a running clock and an imposing advantage at 12-1, the visitors eventually eased into halftime. During the final few moments of the stanza,
Stephanie Green drove home her first goal of the year before
Rachel Wall set up King's second tally of the period to close out the team's 14-goal first half.
Although the Pride was able to light up the scoreboard three times after the break, Christopher Newport never lost control. Singer answered Greensboro's first goal of the half before Obregon chipped in with her first score of the game. Later, Obregon added her second goal following an assist by
Nina Stinson before
Shannon Fluharty teamed up with Marshall at 11:39 on the way to a 19-4 lead.
After that point, Obregon added two final goals, including another one set up by Marshall, to close out the victory. The first-year phenom now has three straight multi-goal efforts and six overall this season.
With CNU's offensive attack consuming much of the spotlight, the team's defense also looked sharp once again. The Captains caused nine turnovers during the game, including a pair by
Monica Evans and
Caitlin Osbourne. Green also picked up a team-best three ground balls, while
Hanna Slough made a pair of saves in goal.
Overall, CNU out-shot Greensboro, 36-10, and held a 16-9 edge in ground balls. The Captains also posted 15 draw controls during the afternoon, highlighted by four each from King and
Becca Geist.
Following the team's modest two-game road swing, Christopher Newport will kick off a four-game home stand on Saturday when the team welcomes Methodist to town for a 3 p.m. battle at Captains Turf Field. That game will serve as the second annual Debbie Cale Classic, which is held to promote education and raise awareness and funds for the fight against ovarian cancer.
