NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After suffering a 7-2 loss to Washington College a year ago, the Christopher Newport University women's tennis team responded in 2013 with a tightly contested 5-4 win at home over the Shorewomen. CNU improves to 4-4 overall, while Washington falls to 1-2 so far this season.
Rookie
Jackie Gaine picked up wins in both doubles and singles action on Wednesday afternoon, including the match-clinching victory late in the day. With her team leading 4-3 and just one other match still left on the court, Gaine was able to fend off a rally by Marielle McIntyre for the victory. Gaine won the first set, 6-3, and took a 3-0 lead in the second. McIntyre bounced back, but the CNU freshman held on for a 7-5 win in the second set.
The Captains had taken a 4-1 lead in the match with a strong performance in doubles play.
Kim Morrissett and
Marion Gloor paired for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Gaine added an 8-6 win with
Angela Stallman at No. 3. Stallman's quick win at No. 6 singles over Amy Stevens (6-0, 6-1), and
Jodi Noland's victory at No. 3 over Kat Cohen (6-0, 6-3) led to the big early lead.
The Shorewomen, though, would respond with wins at three of the top four singles flights, but Gaine's victory at No. 5 clinched a 5-4 win over CNU. It was the third straight match that ended in a 5-4 score for the women, and second straight victory.
The Captains will now travel for three straight matches this weekend, taking on Oglethorpe University and LaGrange College on Saturday, March 16 and Piedmont College on Sunday, March 17.
