CNU Softball Drops Doubleheader to Lynchburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday to Lynchburg. CNU fell in the opener, 7-4, and lost the nightcap, 7-5, at Captains Park.

CNU squandered a 3-0 lead in the opener, as the Hornets scored two runs in the sixth inning and then plated four more in the seventh for the 7-4 victory.

In the second game, Lynchburg jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first, and then held on for the 7-5 triumph as CNU's rally in the bottom of the seventh came up short. The Captains left the potential game-tieing runners on base in the seventh after scoring three runs to pull within striking distance.

The Captains have now lost four in a row and are 10-7 for the season. Lynchburg improves to 11-4.

Lynchburg sophomore Amber Ingram played a key role in both victories for the Hornets. Ingram hit two home runs in the opener and knocked in six of the Hornets seven runs. Ingram then pitched a complete game in the nightcap and also drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.

Hornets third baseman Danielle Powell, a freshman, posted three hits in each game, going six-for-eight in the doubleheader. Powell also scored four times.

For the Captains, junior Kristina McLaughlin and freshman Sarah Munsch both homered in the first game. For Munsch, it was her first career home run as a Captain and put CNU ahead, 4-3, going to the seventh inning. Lynchburg rallied to score four times in the seventh to pull out the victory.

Senior catcher Chelsea Mitchell reached base seven times in eight at bats in the doubleheader. Mitchell was three-for-three in the opener with a walk, and then went two-for-three in the second game with another walk. All five of her hits were singles.

Sophomore Sabrina Hill posted three hits and drove in three runs for CNU in the twin bill.

Christopher Newport hits the road this weekend, as the 12th-ranked Captains play a USA South doubleheader Saturday at LaGrange, and then play two on Sunday at Piedmont. Play will begin both days this weekend at 1 p.m.
