CNU Softball Hosts Lynchburg Thursday at 2 and 4 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport softball squad returns to action Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader vs. Lynchburg at Captains Park. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. CNU is 10-5 overall and 2-1 in the USA South. Keith Parr's squad lost its last two games on Sunday to Kean and Piedmont in the Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia.

The Hornets of Lynchburg enter play with a record of 9-4 on the year. Lynchburg is coming off a split last Sunday with Salisbury. The Hornets had won five straight games before losing the second game of the twin bill.

The Captains, who were picked to win the USA South in the league's pre-season poll, are ranked #12 in the nation this week. CNU went 37-11 last year and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship. The Captains also went 15-3 in conference action last season on the way to their fourth straight USA South regular season title.

The CNU lineup is anchored by reigning USA South Player of the Year Sabrina Hill and senior All-American Chelsea Mitchell, who both hit over .400 last season. Seniors Whitney Haller, Melanie Hazelwood, Elizabeth Holte, and Krista Townsend lead the Captains in the pitching circle after the four standouts combined for 98 percent of the team's workload over the past two seasons.
