Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Christopher Newport bounced back on day two of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Leadoff Classic, sweeping a doubleheader with a 5-1 win over DePauw, followed by a 7-4 win over Fontbonne in the Silver Bracket.
The NFCA DIII Leadoff Classic features 28 of the best Division III softball teams in the nation and breaks into four tournament brackets after the first three games. CNU went 2-1 in their three games and was slotted into the Silver Bracket against Fontbonne on day two. The Captains will advance to play Kean University in the Silver semifinals at 10:00 am. The winner will advance to play the winner of the other semifinal between Piedmont and Emory, with first pitch set for Noon. The two teams that lose in the first game of the day will play in the third-place game at 2:00 pm.
CNU reached the Silver Bracket with a 5-1 victory over DePauw in the opener on Saturday. Senior
Whitney Haller held the Tigers to just one run on three hits, picking up the win for the Captains, while the CNU offense smacked 10 hits and scored five runs.
Four would come in a big second inning, behind a bases-clearing triple from junior
Kelley Foate. CNU opened the inning with a walk from
Tori Clarke and a single by
Alexis Pope.
Kristen Olsen moved the runners up with a ground ball and rookie
Meagan Jones singled up the middle to load the bases. That would set up Foate's big triple, and CNU would tack on one more as Foate came in to score on a
Kristina McLaughlin single.
Melanie Hazelwood picked up the win in game number two, in a come-from-behind win for the Captains. Fontbonne puleld ahead, 3-1, in the bottom of the third inning. CNU would respond with another big inning, scoring five runs in the top of the sixth to take a big 7-3 lead. The Griffins would tack on a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Captains held on for the win and advanced to Sunday's semifinal game against the Cougars.
