CNU Football Hosts Averett Saturday Night During Homecoming Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University football team has won its last two games on the road, and Saturday night the Captains host Averett at POMOCO Stadium. It's the final regular-season home game of the year for CNU, and comes during Homecoming Weekend at Christopher Newport.

Kickoff time is set for 7:00 p.m. Tickets will go on sale at 5:00 p.m. and the gates will open at 6:00 p.m.

CNU is coming off a tremendous defensive effort last Saturday night in LaGrange, Georgia. The Captains held LaGrange College, a team that had been averaging 38 points per game, to just 10 in a 13-10 victory.

The Captains are now 6-2 on the year and 3-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference.

Averett has struggled this year, and the Cougars have lost their last five games. Mike Dunlevy's squad is 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the USA South. Averett lost last week to Huntingdon in Danville, 50-20. The Averett defense has given up 40 or more points in each of its last four games.

The game will be the 13th in the series, and the Captains have won 10 of the first 12 meetings. CNU prevailed in Danville last year, 28-13.

Following Saturday night's home finale, the Captains will conclude the regular season on the road at Ferrum next Saturday, November 16, at 1:00 p.m.

All CNU games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at 6:30 p.m.
