NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team will have the honor of hosting the University's first ever Capital Athletic Conference Tournament game on Saturday, as the third-seeded Captains take on sixth-seeded Wesley College at Captains Field. CNU (12-5-1) will host the CAC Quarterfinal matchup at 6:00 pm, with live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com.
Admission will be charged for the event, with tickets available at 5:00 pm. Prices are $5 for adults, $3 for students, children, seniors and military; Christopher Newport University students with a valid ID will be admitted free.
CNU and the Wolverines (8-9-2) have seen a lot of eachother this fall, as Wesley was one of the teams in the 2013 Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic to kick off the season. Wesley then returned to Captains Field for a regular season conference matchup against the Captains, that CNU won 3-0.
Heading into their first ever CAC Tournament, the Captains rank second in the league in scoring, averaging over 2.5 goals per game. Leading the charge is junior forward
Jalon Brown, the league's leading scorer with his second straight 30+ point season. Brown has scored a league-high 12 goals and has added the most helpers in the CAC as well, with nine. Sophomore
Ryan Balfour has added a 22-point effort in his second year, ranking number two in the conference in scoring.
Defensively, junior
Alec Faulkner has moved back to the back line, joining classmate
Tommy O'Neal, senior
Stephen Landry and sophomore
Garrett Van Nutt. The Captains defense has been led, though, by senior goalkeeper
Sean Killion, who has started all eight shutouts this year. Killion has saved 77.4% of shots on-goal and has a goals against average of 0.85.
The Wolverines ended the regular season on a high note with wins in four of their last five games. Rookie Will Mileski has scored a team-high 18 points and ranks fourth in the CAC in scoring. He has scored seven goals, adding four assists while making just six starts so far this year. Oluwatobi Sowande and Danny Ramirez are also in double-figure scoring for Wesley.
The game will kickoff at 6:00 pm. The winner of the matchup will travel to face second-seeded and seventh-ranked York College (Pa.) on Wednesday, November 6.
