NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU women's basketball team continues its farewell tour of the USA South Athletic Conference with its final trip to Danville, Virginia to face Averett University on Saturday. The Captains, unbeaten through the first 12 games, will be playing in their sixth straight road game and will look to remain atop the conference standings after starting 5-0 against league foes. The Cougars will look to spoil the perfect mark after starting the year 4-8 overall, 3-2 against the league.
Tip is set for 6:00 pm on Saturday at the E. Stuart James Grant Center, with live stats available at CNUsports.com. A link to the live video webcast hosted by AU will also be available. CNU and averett have one of the longest-standing rivalries in USA South women's basketball, dating back to 1975-76. The Captains have won a dominant 61 times in the first 70 matchups.
Under first year head coach
Bill Broderick, the Captains have surged out to the second best start in program history, winning the first 12 games of the year. The top streak came in 2008-09 when CNU won 30 straight games and dropped their only game of the season in the NCAA Sweet 16. This year, the Captains have been led by a stifling defense that is holding opponents to a meager 48.3 points per game on 31.1% shooting. CNU is forcing 23.0 turnovers per game, with 9.9 steals and 2.2 blocks per contest.
Offensively,
Tia Perry is leading the group with 15.0 points per game, while adding 2.9 steals per contest. Sophomore
Camry Green is averaging a double-double through the first 12 games, scoring 10.0 points and grabbing 10.1 rebounds per game; she ranks second in the conference in rebounding.
Averett lost six straight games earlier in the season but has righted the ship to the tune of three straight victories, including wins at Methodist and at home versus N.C. Wesleyan. Two players are averaging double figure scoring, including senior leader Mette Scheiman. Scheiman is pouring in a team-high 14.6 points per game while also grabbing 6.3 rebounds per game. Shannon Smith is adding 10.1 points per game for the Cougars while Caroline Young leads the squad with 6.5 rebounds per contest.
