NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team was handed a heartbreaking 2-1 setback to the Salisbury Sea Gulls (4-3) in double overtime on Wednesday night. The Captains (2-6) outshot the Sea Gulls, 16-11, but a goal with less than four minutes remaining in extra time gave Salisbury the win.
Neither team was able to convert in the first half, as CNU held a 6-3 edge in shots including three on-frame. Senior
Annemarie Weaver placed two headers on-goal off of corner kicks, but SU's Michelle Conrad was there for the stop.
Early in the second half, CNU's rookie goalkeeper
Elena Currence was tested on a nice cross from Salisbury right in front of the net. Sarah Pfundstein was there, about three yards in front of Currence putting a hard shot on-goal, but Currence reacted quickly to make the stop.
It was the Sea Gulls that would strike first in the second half, though, off of a throw-in. Heather Deamond took the throw for Salisbury and found the feet of Logan O'Meara. O'Meara, with her back to the goal, turned and lofted a long shot into the back corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
The Captains would waste no time in responding, however, netting the equalizer less than three minutes later. After what looked to be a broken play, senior
Dani Gunderson corralled a loose ball, dribbled to the right past a defender and then laced a hard shot from 40 yards out into the back of the net.
Heading into overtime, the Captains offense continued to increase the pressure on Salisbury. Within the final minute of the first overtime period, junior
Emma O'Reilly slipped a pass to rookie
Shaydah Naraghi for an open look at the left side of the goal, but the shot went just wide. Then, in the second overtime,
Dani Gunderson had a look on-goal from long range but it too was stopped by Conrad.
The Sea Gulls would end the match in the 106th minute when Casey Hafford scored from the right corner of the box. She sent a long shot to the left corner that just got beyond the outstretched arms of Currence for the winner.
Both teams managed six shots on-goal in the game with Conrad making five saves and Currence with four. Gunderson led the attack for CNU with four shots including two on-goal.
The Captains return to conference action this weekend as they host Maryville College on Saturday at 1:00 pm, followed by a 1:00 pm Sunday matchup against Ferrum College.
