CNU Falls to Roanoke in NCAA Regional Championship, 3-1

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University softball team could not solve the riddle of Roanoke starter Kelly Higbie Monday morning. Higbie, named the regional MVP, held CNU to just one run and six hits to lead the Maroons to a 3-1 victory over the Captains in the Newport News Regional championship.

CNU starter Whitney Haller gave up a run in the bottom of the first off an RBI triple by Roanoke shortstop, Stephanie Clark and yielded a second run in the third inning when Alea Bier singled up the middle to score Leona Rainey.  Haller settled in and retired eight in a row over the next three innings.

Roanoke added their final run in the bottom half of the sixth when Felice Lowery hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Hollee Warlitner.  Roanoke managed three runs off of only five hits and two walks.

Senior second baseman Jen Falin singled home the Captains only run in the third after Kelley Foate singled and advanced to third.  Foate finished 2-4, the only CNU player with more than one hit.  CNU finishes the 2012 campaign with a 37-11 record and will lose four seniors (Falin, Maggie Farris, Jordan beadles and Felicia Price) who have won 153 games during their careers.

Higbie was named the tournament MVP after throwing every inning of Roanoke's four games and earning a perfect 4-0 record.
