RALEIGH, N.C. -- CNU erased a 5-1 deficit in game one before suffering a walk-off home run against the Avenging Angels of Meredith College (26-10, 12-6), but bounced back for a doubleheader split with a 4-0 shutout in game two. The 12th-ranked Captains (29-7, 15-3) saw their nine-game win streak snapped by the Angels, the number two seed in next week's USA South Conference Tournament.

CNU secured the regular season title and accompanying top seed in the tournament yesterday, but still had to face Meredith in the conference finale on Saturday. In game one, the Angels jumped on top of CNU starter Melanie Hazelwood with two runs in the first, three in the second.

The Captains cut into the 5-0 lead in the third, when rookie Sabrina Hill singled home Kelley Foate. Then, in the fifth, the bats opened up for four runs tying the game at five.

Candice Zollars started the inning with a single, coming around to score on a Kristen Olsen double. Hill picked up another RBI with an infield single and junior catcher Chelsea Mitchell blasted a two-run homer to center field to cap the comeback.

Junior Elizabeth Holte had come into the game in relief of Hazelwood, shutting out the Angels for four innings while scattering five hits. In the bottom of the seventh, though, Amanda White led off the inning with a solo home run to walk off with the win.

CNU bounced back in game two, behind a strong pitching performance from junior Whitney Haller. Haller gave up just four hits in the game, striking out three in a complete game shutout victory. Mitchell had the eventual game-winning hit in the top of the third, smoking a two-RBI double to left field.

The Captains added two more in the sixth, when Foate's single plated a pair of runners, Amber Arevalo and Kristina McLaughlin.

With the top seed, CNU earns a first round bye in the 2012 USA South Tournament, and will play the winner of the #8 Peace vs. #9 N.C. Wesleyan game on Friday, April 13. The CNU game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
