FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- CNU picked up a pair of singles wins against nationally ranked Mary Washington (11-11) on Thursday, but the Eagles swept doubles and took a 7-2 win over the Captains. Senior Eric Shulman won at No. 1 singles and sophomore Joey Manilla took his match at No. 4 singles. CNU falls to 8-8 overall this season.

Mary Washington swept the doubles matches, including a big regional matchup at No. 1 featuring the third-ranked Christopher Newport tandem of Shulman and Matt King versus the Eagles' fifth-ranked pair, Evan Charles and Donato Rizzolo. The home team took an 8-6 win in the pro set.

In singles, Shulman bounced back with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Alex Blakhin in the top position. Manilla was stretched to a first set tiebreak, but held on to win 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in a very tight match. CNU picked up 16 games in the other four singles matches, but could not get past the Eagles players.

CNU is back in action on Friday, travelling to Averett University to make up a rained out match from last weekend. Opening serve is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
