NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport defeated Mary Baldwin twice Tuesday, winning both games of a USA South doubleheader by scores of 8-0 in five innings. CNU junior starting pitchers
Krista Townsend and
Whitney Haller both went the distance throwing back to back shutouts.
In game one, Townsend allowed just two hits as the Captains defeated the Flying Squirrels, 8-0. CNU scored four runs in the second inning, a run in the third, and put the game away with three in the fourth. Freshman first baseman
Sabrina Hill had three singles and drove in three runs. The Captains posted nine hits in game one.
Townsend improved her record to 7-1 on the season with the shutout performance.
In the nightcap, the Captains socked 11 more hits as CNU plated one run in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and ended the game with two in the fifth.
Sabrina Hill had two doubles in three at bats in the second game to go 5 for 6 in the doubleheader. Another freshman, catcher
Kelsey Lewis, also had two hits in Game #2.
Haller was the story for the Captains, allowing just two hits and striking out eight. The junior improved her season's record to 9-3.
The Captains are now 26-6 overall and 12-2 atop the USA South. Mary Baldwin falls to 5-25 overall and 0-16 in the league.
CNU heads to Peace and Meredith this Friday and Saturday for conference doubleheaders.
