VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The 14th ranked Christopher Newport softball team trailed host Virginia Wesleyan, 6-5, heading into the top of the seventh inning of game one today, but exploded for a nine-run inning to take game one, 14-6. The Captains then led wire-to-wire in game two, taking a 5-2 victory for the doubleheader sweep. CNU improves to 24-6 overall this season while the Marlins slip to 15-9 this season.

The home Marlins took a 3-0 lead in the first game on starter Melanie Hazelwood, moving station-to-station with three runs in the first inning. In the top of the fourth, CNU tied things up with an RBI double by Sabrina Hill and a two-run home run by junior catcher Chelsea Mitchell. It was her sixth home run of the season.

The Marlins re-took the lead with two in the bottom of the fourth, but CNU answered right back to tie the game at five when senior Jen Falin and sophomore Kristina McLaughlin each picked up RBIs in the top half of the fifth inning. Still, the host Marlins came back to take another lead, 6-5, headed into the final inning.

That's when the CNU bats came alive. Three straight singles loaded the bases to start the inning setting up an RBI single by Lauren Stewart. A pair of passed balls scored two more runs followed by a sacrifice fly from senior Felicia Price. CNU then led comfortably, 9-6, but kept coming with a bases-loaded RBI groundout by Hill and a two-RBI double by Mitchell, capping a tremendous day at the plate. CNU tacked on two more with another sac fly and courtesy of a throwing error by the Marlins.

With game one in the books, CNU turned to junior Whitney Haller to pitch in game two. She tossed a shutout through the first five innings while the Captains offense staked her to a 2-0 lead. Falin drove in a pair with a double in the top of the fifth to put CNU on top.

Wesleyan cut the lead in half in the sixth, but Falin stepped up to the plate again in the seventh to give Haller a little more breathing room. With two on and two out, Falin smacked a three-run homer to put CNU up, 5-1. The home team made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases against Haller with Tori Higginbotham coming up. The Marlins hitter drilled a shot to center, but Price made the grab at the wall to secure the win.

CNU returns home to play a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 3 against Mary Baldwin College in USA South action. The twin bill is set to begin at 2:30 pm.
