Captains Fall to #13 Mary Washington, 15-10

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team suffered their second loss of the season to #13 Mary Washington, 15-10. Hannah Wilkerson collected a season-high 10 saves.

Mary Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game but the Captains quickly answered with two goals from Kelly Lane and Lauren King. After two more UMW goals Ashton Marshall scored her first of the game to make it a 5-3 score with 16 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Eagles extended their lead to five with three straight goals but the Captains scored three of their own in the last four minutes of the half to pull within two.

Mary Washington scored the first two of the second half making it 10-6 just five minutes in. Marshall scored her second of the game and Mary Washington scored three straight giving them a six goal lead.

CNU finished out the half scoring three goals and allowing two more by the Eagles for a 15-10 final.

Kelly Lane, Rachel Tomlinson, King and Marshall each scored a pair of goals and King had the only assist in the game. Goalkeeper Wilkerson led the team with six ground balls and defender Monica Evans had five.

Becca Geist won seven draw controls as the Captains totaled 16 to Mary Washington's 11. Morgan Smith had the only caused turnover for the Captains.

CNU returns to action as they host Roanoke College on Sunday, April 22, at 2:00pm.
